Together We Grow Playgroup 2011

A place to Laugh, Learn, and Love...

Together We Grow is a "playgroup" program designed for children up to the age of 3 and their parent or caregiver. We work from a Christian foundation which encourages children to learn and interact in a positive environment.

At Together We Grow, children will learn about the world that they are discovering. This will contribute to their social, emotional and intellectual growth through use of various activities and engaging materials. Children will learn how to share and have respect for each other. They will enjoy activities together and also with their parent/caregiver. Children will have discovery time, art projects and stories. They will learn colors, beginning sight words, and songs. The class will share in prayer and enjoy snack time.

Together We Grow provides great interaction for parents/caregivers and children alike!

Together We Grow offers 13-session programs on Tuesday mornings, 9:30am - 11:00am. The fall program runs September through December and the Winter/Spring program runs January through April.

will be held on April 22 at 2 p.m.

St. George's Episcopal Church

Darby Road & Ardmore Avenue*

Sanctuary doors will be open for quiet prayer
& meditation beginning at 12:00 noon on Friday.

The centerpiece of this year's service will be a dramatic reading of the entire passion narrative from the Gospel according to Matthew by three lay readers. The congregation will also participate in this reading, drawing each worshiper into the experience of Jesus' suffering.

A special meditation will be offered by the Rev. Dr. Peter B. Doghramji, a resident of Havertown and currently pastor of the Armenian Evangelical Church of New York City.

Singers from various churches in the township will come together to form the joint choir, and will present an anthem as well as lead the congregational singing.

Let others know about this, and plan to attend as part of your observance of this all-important time in the Christian calendar.

PLEASE NOTE: Choir members should be present at 12:30 p.m. for a rehearsal. Bring a black folder if you have one; black robes will be available at St. George's. Clergy should be present no later than 1:30 p.m.. Liturgical vestments (if you use them) should be plain black.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of John Melian, longtime member of the church, classical music lover and amateur double bassist.

The Society Hill String Quintet was formed in 2004, bringing together one member from each of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s string sections to perform a chamber concert at the Society Hill Synagogue. Since then the group, which includes violinists Paul Arnold and Elina Kalendareva, violist Judy Geist, cellist Kathryn Picht Read and bassist Robert Kesselman, has performed concerts around the Philadelphia area, including regular appearances on the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Music Series. Their programs feature music written and specially arranged for string quintet, as well as duos and trios.

Haverford Township Joins to Give Thanks

"Giving thanks...opens us up to see more blessings around us. It also opens our hands to help others more."

Offering personal examples and stories highlighting the centrality of thanks in the life of an individual, a worshiping community, or a nation devoted to God, Rev. Matt Staniz of Temple Lutheran Church addressed the more than 100 people filling the chapel at St. Raphaela Center on Wednesday evening, November 24.

The occasion was the annual Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith Service for Haverford Township, and numerous participants from congregations and organizations throughout the township brought a warm and joyous tone to this year's event. Sister Margaret Scott, aci, Director of the St. Raphaela Center , welcomed the people, even as folding chairs were being brought in to accommodate the overflow. Ralph Purri, Music Director at St. Denis, not only led the joint choir in two pieces, but also ably taught and then led the congregation in hymns and responses. He and Jo Cauffman (of Hope United Methodist Church) accompanied the singing on organ and electronic piano.

Roe Miller, President of SJCC Bnai Aaron read a Jewish prayer for the miracles of the first Thanksgiving, while Dan Kirby, Director of Youth &Family Ministries at Union United Methodist Church, led the people in praise with guitar and voice. Reading the scripture lessons were Fr. James McKeaney of St. John Neumann Church, Rev. Jim McIntyre of Hope United Methodist Church, and Tim Denny, Director of Township Parks & Recreation. Clergy Association Secretary Rev. Mary Jane Kirby, also of Union United Methodist Church, gave a call for thank-offerings to benefit the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Delaware County, and Rev. Lynn Lampman of St. James United Church of Christ led a time of prayer and intercession. President of Haverford Towsnhip Clergy Associaton, Rev. Nishan Bakalian of Armenian Martyrs' Congregational Church, closed the service with the benediction. A grateful throng then enjoyed the refreshments prepared by the sisters of St. Raphaela Center as they shared a time of fellowship around tables.

In his message Rev. Staniz pointed out that when gratitude is built into the life of a people, as we see in the life of Israel in Deuteronomy, they are led "from thankful living to thankful giving." That spirit, we hope, is being exemplified in our community and congregations as they worship and serve, individually or together, in God's name.

Together We Grow provides great interaction for parents/caregivers and children alike and is now open for registration for the Winter/Spring 2011 program, running from January 20 – April 21. Past participants agree that this makes a wonderful and meaningful Christmas gift for a family member!

The Winter/Spring 2011 program for Together We Grow Playgroup is “Nursery Rhymes,” which will run for 13 sessions on Thursday mornings, January 20 – April 21. There are two times available to choose from--either 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. OR 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

Teens Walking the Walk at Havertown Center

The grounds at Havertown Center (1105 Earlington Road) look nice and clean now. It has been a snowy, messy winter and a windy beginning of spring, leaving lots of dead leaves, sticks and bits of trash and papers strewn all over the grass and around the Center entrances. Just a few weeks ago, on Sunday, March 21, teens from Walking the Walk were outside Havertown Center with rakes, brooms and trash bags cleaning up. And they even planted tulips in the planters!

Havertown Center, located in the old Brookline School on Earlington Road, is a community center serving older adults and promoting positive aging in our community. The Center is a vibrant community where aging is continually re-defined.

The Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia declares that Walking the Walk puts their mission into action:

“Walking the Walk is an initiative that provides teenagers with experiences, skills and resources necessary to live in a diverse world, deepen their own identities, and break through walls that distance and divide them from people of other religious, cultural and economic backgrounds.”

In collaboration with the Haverford Township Clergy Association, Rev. Nicole D. Diroff of the Interfaith Center has brought its program to Delaware County. The Suburban Jewish Community Center-Bnai Aaron, Hope United Methodist, and Grace Trinity United Church of Christ are the Partner Communities and Havertown Center is the Community Service Partner.

Teens from these faith communities met five times from November to March for interfaith learning and dialogue, reflection and community building, focusing on the shared values of “Honoring My Self and My Heritage” and “Helping Those In Need." The teens finish this weekend, April 18, with Day of Environmental Action for Teenagers at the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Center

I Cannot Be Silent . . .

"I Cannot Be Silent: Testimonies of Peacemaking" is a documentary film by Vic Compher. Compher's important film celebrates the lives of several elder activists from the Philadelphia area who have spent their lives advocating for peace, and seeks to introduce their vital legacy to a new generation.

"I Cannot Be Silent" is a timely and thought provoking grass roots documentary. The peace movement is alive and documented as the torch is passed to the next generation of peace makers.

Union UMC will host DELCO Interfaith Hospitality Network December 6-13!

Guests of the Delaware County Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) will be arriving at Union UMC on Sunday, December 6 and will be staying there until December 13. Our guests are parents with children who receive housing and employment support through the IHN. In a typical week 3-5 families (8-14 individuals) are supported with a warm place to stay and much care and encouragement.

Volunteers are needed to cover the supper hours (5-7 p.m.), evening hours (7-9 p.m.), and overnight hours (9 p.m. - 7 a.m.). If you would be able to help, please contact the office of Union UMC at 610-789-1700 and please leave a message if no one is there.

Your help with monetary contributions to support the meals provided throughout the week and the ongoing ministry of IHN are also greatly appreciated. Go here to learn more about the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
